  • Weight Loss

Losing weight is definitely the most powerful reason for dieting, particularly if there are critical health issues. Excessive weight will put undue stress on your back and knees as well as some other joints. Eventually this will lead to increased pain and decreased mobility as the cartilage starts to wear out. Internal organs are also affected as they will have to work harder to pump blood and oxygen through your body. This causes increased risk of heart attack and stroke. These health issues would definitely be another reason for dieting. Also you will likely feel too tired at the end of the day to enjoy any physical leisure activities.

  • Fitness

Fitness is another reason for dieting. If you enjoy outdoor competitive activities, this is pretty much mandatory. Many people also join clubs and participate in bowling or curling tournaments which also involve some physical stamina. Others like to go to community leisure centers where they can work out at their own pace and gradually progress to more strenuous activities.

  • Appearance

On the other side of the coin, where people are in a more sedentary occupation, appearance may be the deciding reason for dieting. Executives are expected to follow a set standard in their respective companies. Even with the discrimination laws it is a well known fact that overweight people are often passed over when it comes to promotions (another powerful reason for dieting). Also there is always the element of derogatory remarks and cliques are often formed to exclude overweight people. This is prevalent full circle from elementary school to the office. Vanity knows no boundaries; for some dieting begins early on in life and continues on to retirement.

  • Slings and Arrows

Emotional scars are often a byproduct of obesity. It is not easy to maintain long term motivation on the rocky road to success. However revenge is sweet when people can rise above the slights and wounds and come back as good or better than their antagonists. In some cases this can be the ultimate reason for dieting.

Thank you for your comment. I've been away from my computer for a while. My old XP crashed and I had to move everything over to Windows 7.
