Conventional weight loss programs often have a set schedule, where you are required to attend group meetings, have regular weigh ins, and chart your progress "in house". This is a good source of motivation as it encourages you to stay "on target" and also allows you to work jointly with other people who have the same problem. However, this may not be suitable for people who do not have a flexible enough lifestyle to follow the guidelines of these weight loss programs. Another benefit here is that many centers also have their own fitness equipment and personal trainers to guide you. Also they may also have trained dietitians on staff to help you plan your weekly menus.

Basically you get what you pay for. Some weight loss programs will include "all of the above" for a set fee, while others only cover the basics and let you make some of your own modifications to suit your budget. If you are willing to do some of your own research as to exercises and/or diets, you can usually cut some corners here by doing your own grocery shopping and buying some basic exercise equipment.

Online weight loss programs are generally considerably less expensive if you are self motivated enough to follow them. When you register for a membership, they usually provide online videos or DVD's for various recommended exercises. Also they will have down loadable healthy weight loss recipes you can prepare yourself. Many also offer email support and have forums where you can communicate anonymously with other dieters. This can be very beneficial if you are somewhat self conscious about interacting with others publicly.

Jenny Craig has you buy their meals, which ensures you of a balanced diet and also offers personal coaching: however, this can get quite expensive. Some other weight loss programs focus mainly on low carbohydrate, low calorie, fat free diets. However, this can often be taken to some extreme limits and create some negative side effects.

Weight loss programs can readily be found in the telephone book or online. Word of mouth is usually the most reliable source when making your decision before you begin your campaign. Most of us have friends or relatives who have been down this road before. The Internet also often has unbiased reviews on different weight loss programs listing their pros and cons.
